Interested parties hi there,
i've known about this project for quite some time and i thought that i should finally make contact! i really like the idea, i am a great fan of AoE. the reason that i am making contact is because myself and a few others are interested in contributing, whether it be in code or administration.
would this be ok?

Of course. Free Empires is an openly developed, open source project! We encourage people to contribute.

great! well i'm defo going to contribute myself, but i would only really be able to help with administrative stuff for a bit cos i'm busy with work. but i have a guy thats really interested in image/video encoding so i was thinking he could help out with the game engine. he's new to open source but he's a good programmer

Re: great! he's new to open source but he's a good programmer
Well the only really difference between Open Source and closed source, he will not have to deal with. That is the distribution of the source code. That is Piga's job.

open source well when i said open source i meant the working environment, you guys planning to be using svn?
and also the idea of OS libs, and on that note what libs are you using? OpenGl? Stratagus?
oh and i have another one for the cause, and plan to get a few more
and also, do piga software have a website? the link on the thread that i found you guys was a broken one... i'd like to read up a bit about them
klingoncowboy4- 06-02-2007
They do have a website but it has been saying "coming soon" for months (Graham plans to fix that after final exams).
There is a Free Empires website, but all it has is a couple of development screenshots.
real_ate- 06-02-2007
hmm.. yea, i've seen both of those in my travels...
well the question that i was asking about the libs was really just to find out what direction you guys were thinking about taking, the guy that i said was really interested is currently having a look at some openGl stuff now. is what you already have using those libraries? and with regards to the games engine, are you building it from scratch?
(just in case your wondering, i'm dont mean to criticize if you are building stuff from scratch... i'd quite like it in fact  )
klingoncowboy4- 06-02-2007
They are are building it from scratch. In fact this is a rebuild.
They started it in GameMaker 5.0 for Windows but decided that it would be better to redo it in Gambas. GameMaker is wine compatible but a Linux AOE is more important than a Free (as in price and freedom) AOE for Windows. They are not using anything like OpenGL as far as I know.

eh... also don't mean to critisise but is there any reason that they are not coding it in c++?
it is a real-time program after all

I like GAMBAS and I am the main developer.
I am as of yet not very used to c++.
Also using a BASIC like language helps attract people with little programming knowledge to come to the team.
real_ate- 06-03-2007
oh .. ok...
i understand were your coming from, i suppose it makes a lot of sense since its hard to get people involved in these sort of things.. but they way that i look at it is that basic would not be quite as easy to optimise for a real time game once things start to get big! (i mean by the second release)
or it could just be my own bias towards c++ :) but i do have to say that the guys that i have lined up may pull out cos we don't have any background in basic (i'm using basic too much, i really mean gambas)
also we could all become very good at c++ very quickly once we need it if you know what i mean, and i could probably get another 2 or 3 people who are up on c++ to join us :D
klingoncowboy4- 06-03-2007
What tools would you recommend for Fedora?
real_ate- 06-03-2007
WOW! wow! i just found out something very VERY cool!
have you all ever heard of QT? i just found out that they have a whole disign thing that is drag and drop just like basic/gamas! and its c++ :D

ps. its also cross platform... works on windows mac and linux
